Brother Status Monitor. Commandline: "BrStsWnd.exe [name of your Brother printer]". Sets up an icon in your System Tray with options and menus.

Caused by Brother Status Monitor loading at Windows Start Up. Preventing it from loading at start up eliminates the error.

I found the error occured when the Brother status monitor tried to load into the sys tray. I resolved the problem by not allowing it load the status monitor at Win XP start up.

brstswnd is a status screen for the Brother HL-2030 series. This application is harmless, only when you have installed printer drivers from Brother, or using a Brother printer in your network where you have installed the drivers for. But actually, brstswnd is not needed for any Brother printer to print records. It only shows you the status. So therefore, it may be deleted from the computer.

Appears immediately on any box that has an installed HL-2040 or 2140 Brother printer.- probably others too.

I just bought and installed a Brother printer. Receive a "brstswnd" error message when booting the computer and the printer is turned off. Message does not appear when printer is on when booting up. Didn't have the problem before so believe it must be associated with the new printer being turned off.

Best practices for resolving BrstsWnd issues

A clean and tidy computer is the key requirement for avoiding problems with BrstsWnd. This means running a scan for malware, cleaning your hard drive using cleanmgr and sfc /scannow, uninstalling programs that you no longer need, checking for Autostart programs (using msconfig) and enabling Windows' Automatic Update. Always remember to perform periodic backups, or at least to set restore points.

Should you experience an actual problem, try to recall the last thing you did, or the last thing you installed before the problem appeared for the first time. Use the resmon command to identify the processes that are causing your problem. Even for serious problems, rather than reinstalling Windows, you are better off doing a repair of your installation, or in the case of Windows 8, executing the DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth command. This allows you to repair the operating system without losing data.

To help you analyze the BrstsWnd.exe process on your computer, the following programs have proven to be helpful: Security Task Manager displays all running Windows tasks, including embedded hidden processes, such as keyboard and browser monitoring or Autostart entries.
