What is D4.exe?

The genuine D4.exe file is a software component of Dimension 4 by Thinking Man Software.
"D4.exe" is a file located in Windows for Dimension 4 software. It is the main executable for the program and ensures that your PC clock is accurate. The file runs in the background and connects to low-level IPs known as SNTP servers to check the current time and ensure that your PC's clock is correct by up to a few milliseconds. The file accepts user commands, which include setting the routinely scheduled time to check the clock server and which server the user picks to use for the synchronization. Thinking Man Software started in 1992 as a software developer for coworkers and friends, which included Dimension 4. As time moved forward, they evolved into providing that software on the internet for anyone to use. They released the software to internet users in 1995.

D4 stands for Dimension version 4

if your internet is not connected, this program may eat up to 50% of your CPU power, slow everything down very very bad
Originally installed for adjusting computer clock accuracy, recently Avast found it infected with Win32:Evo-gen [Susp]. Could be from external source infection though.

Best practices for resolving D4 issues

A clean and tidy computer is the key requirement for avoiding problems with D4. This means running a scan for malware, cleaning your hard drive using cleanmgr and sfc /scannow, uninstalling programs that you no longer need, checking for Autostart programs (using msconfig) and enabling Windows' Automatic Update. Always remember to perform periodic backups, or at least to set restore points.

Should you experience an actual problem, try to recall the last thing you did, or the last thing you installed before the problem appeared for the first time. Use the resmon command to identify the processes that are causing your problem. Even for serious problems, rather than reinstalling Windows, you are better off repairing of your installation or, for Windows 8 and later versions, executing the DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth command. This allows you to repair the operating system without losing data.

To help you analyze the D4.exe process on your computer, the following programs have proven to be helpful: Security Task Manager displays all running Windows tasks, including embedded hidden processes, such as keyboard and browser monitoring or Autostart entries. A unique security risk rating indicates the likelihood of the process being potential spyware, malware or a Trojan. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware detects and removes sleeping spyware, adware, Trojans, keyloggers, malware and trackers from your hard drive.
