I think "Digital Persona" is the program (on HP computers at least) that manages the fingerprint scanner.

It is part of the Digital Persona fingerprint scanner software. dpagent.exe can cause problems with msn/windows live messenger. If autorun is removed from registry it still starts on system boot. just rename the .exe to dpagent.exe.bak or something if your messenger acts weird.

It is run from the Digital Persona on HP computers. Digital Persona runs the fingerprint scan/face recognition for login. On any non-HP system, it might be a problem.

We installed our software at a customer's computer and wondered why the windows return the result imeediately instead waiting for a button press event. For showing windows we used the API SendMessage function which usually calls the window procedure for the specified window and does not return until the window procedure has processed the message. We spent one day to find out that if we shutdown the DpAgent.exe the SendMessage function works properly.
It's related to HP Protect Tools, altought I didn't analyze extensively. Uses around 120Mb RAM which is a waste. Clean version located in \Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP ProtectTools Security Manager\Bin

DPAgent.exe is the fingerprint authentication agent. To stop it running at start up on Dell machines remove it from the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Userinit reg key. Do not remove any other programs also listed on this reg key as it may affect you ability to login!

DPAgent is part of HP Protecttools on our HP PC's. In our case it causes a lot of .net errormessages when closing windows in our ERP software. At the moment I am trying to find out the added value of the Protect tools
Cause heavy UI lag with certain .NET based applications (B&R Automation Studio). Must be removed vom Autostart if you have to work with such applications.
When writing on my keyboard it goes like BEEP BEEP. Just like it ask for permission to something, you know the sound of a program asking for permission to something...
DPAgent.exe suddenly began causing Explorer to continuously crash and restart on two HP laptops at work.

Best practices for resolving DPAgent issues

A clean and tidy computer is the key requirement for avoiding problems with DPAgent. This means running a scan for malware, cleaning your hard drive using cleanmgr and sfc /scannow, uninstalling programs that you no longer need, checking for Autostart programs (using msconfig) and enabling Windows' Automatic Update. Always remember to perform periodic backups, or at least to set restore points.

Should you experience an actual problem, try to recall the last thing you did, or the last thing you installed before the problem appeared for the first time. Use the resmon command to identify the processes that are causing your problem. Even for serious problems, rather than reinstalling Windows, you are better off repairing of your installation or, for Windows 8 and later versions, executing the DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth command. This allows you to repair the operating system without losing data.

To help you analyze the DPAgent.exe process on your computer, the following programs have proven to be helpful: Security Task Manager displays all running Windows tasks, including embedded hidden processes, such as keyboard and browser monitoring or Autostart entries. A unique security risk rating indicates the likelihood of the process being potential spyware, malware or a Trojan. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware detects and removes sleeping spyware, adware, Trojans, keyloggers, malware and trackers from your hard drive.
