This is a software installed with the LG Tools. Supposed to update LG Drives firmware. To remove it, run REGEDIT, search for "lg_fwupdate" , without quotes, then erase all registry entry about that. Then erase the folder lg_fwupdate in your Program Files or Program Files(x86). And if you have a Bluebird software istalled and always in LG Drives even if there is nocd, go to LG website they have the file to remove this.

fwupdate.exe is part of the LG Tools package and looks for updates for the blue ray drivers. I would say that this is important as the formats are still new for blueray and may still be undergoing some changes. Without this file updates to your drives will not take place and new / different version of blueray might not play. In my case I am also using 64 bit and expect many new drives to become available with time.

In my PC, the C:\Program Files (x86)\lg_fwupdate\fwupdate.exe program was installed as a part of the LG Toolkit. I guess it checks an LG service to look for new firmware versions of the installed blu-ray unit. If you're sure its not a virus/malware then you may want to allow this program through the firewall's: in Windows7, go to "Control Panel \ System and Security \ Windows Firewall \ Allow a program through Windows Firewall"; select "Change settings" \ "Allow another program" \ "Browse" and select the program.

This is the blu-ray firmware updater. fw stands for firmware. This does a similar function of that of a blu-ray disk player that is connected to a television. Since blu-ray is a new technology, the firmware will need to be updated occasionally in order to maintain the usability of the player for newly released disks. The process can be disabled, understanding that the task will have to be performed manually at some point. The link provided is for performing manual updates to the firmware.

It's annoying & it slows my Core2-Duo down. I'm getting ready to totally wipe it. If I want an upgrade for a set of software that doesn't come with the drive, I'll go to the website. I'll check every month or so for driver updates. I think the way the program works can provide a backdoor for hackers.

it comes with LG Toolkit - came with bluray drive, it checks for firmware updates, I removed it from the control panel..LG toolkit...uninstall
  Andy
I disabled it with Sysinternals Autoruns. I expect I could run it manually if I come across an update from LG.
  LongtimeUser
Open Cyperlink BD_Adviser and disable (remove check mark) in block next to UPDATE button. This will disable auto-update.

Whether it is needed or not the problem is that it wants to update every windows session!!

Best practices for resolving fwupdate issues

A clean and tidy computer is the key requirement for avoiding problems with fwupdate. This means running a scan for malware, cleaning your hard drive using cleanmgr and sfc /scannow, uninstalling programs that you no longer need, checking for Autostart programs (using msconfig) and enabling Windows' Automatic Update. Always remember to perform periodic backups, or at least to set restore points.

Should you experience an actual problem, try to recall the last thing you did, or the last thing you installed before the problem appeared for the first time. Use the resmon command to identify the processes that are causing your problem. Even for serious problems, rather than reinstalling Windows, you are better off doing a repair of your installation, or in the case of Windows 8, executing the DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth command. This allows you to repair the operating system without losing data.

To help you analyze the fwupdate.exe process on your computer, the following programs have proven to be helpful: Security Task Manager displays all running Windows tasks, including embedded hidden processes, such as keyboard and browser monitoring or Autostart entries. A unique security risk rating indicates the likelihood of the process being potential spyware, malware or a Trojan. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware detects and removes sleeping spyware, adware, Trojans, keyloggers, malware and trackers from your hard drive.
