Total shutdown of my computer. When I brought it back up message it had recovered from a serious error. The error is attributed to the Intel Storage Driver (IdeChnDr.sys) According to Microsoft this product is no longer supported. I may have been my fault as I was using a book from 2003 for Windows XP Timesaving Techniques. Therefore, in 2003 there was no known problem and installed a bad driver. Guess I had better get a more up-to-date Windows XP book.

A clean and tidy computer is the key requirement for avoiding problems with IdeChnDr. This means running a scan for malware, cleaning your hard drive using cleanmgr and sfc /scannow, uninstalling programs that you no longer need, checking for Autostart programs (using msconfig) and enabling Windows' Automatic Update. Should you experience an actual problem, try to recall the last thing you did, or the last thing you installed before the problem appeared for the first time.
