What is igdkmd64?

The genuine igdkmd64.sys file is a software component of Intel Graphics Accelerator Drivers for Windows by Intel Corporation.
Intel provides this Kernel Mode Graphics Driver on an OEM basis to laptop manufacturers for 64-bit Windows computers using Intel graphics chipsets; it resides in "C:\Windows\system32\drivers\". It can be started or stopped under "Services" from the Control Panel and some other programs can also start or stop it. Several different problems involving this driver causing the Windows BSOD ("blue screen of death") have been reported, including a VIDEO_TDR_ERROR in Win8 in 2013 when attempting to reset the display drivers and recover from a timeout, and also a conflict with an option in the free open-source Kodi (XBMC) media management system in 2011 when it tried to automatically adjust the video refresh rate to match video frames-per-second. When it is necessary to update or reinstall "igdkmd64.sys" or any other driver, Intel always recommends that users get driver files from the manufacturer of their machine because Intel download websites only supply generic versions which may lack customizations added by the manufacturer. Intel is an American multinational corporation that is the world's largest and highest-valued semiconductor manufacturer; software only represented four percent of 2015 revenues. Intel advertises a commitment to conflict-free sourcing of minerals used in its semiconductor products, among other initiatives.
