APC Powerchute service. Essential if you want managed shutdown by your APC UPS. Non-essential, if you don't care. The battery backup hardware works without it. Make sure mainserv.exe is located where you installed you Powerchute software and not in a \Windows subfolder.

Came with APC UPS. Was causing interrupts to lock, in other words my controls were sticking while playing games.

After installing APC PowerChute P/E software, task manager showed mainserv.exe using 99% of my system resources! I removed the APC program & just left the hardware in use.
