Maybe not dangerous, but a real pain in the neck (my machine is XP). I don't know which software it came with. Once self-installed, it proceeded to give an error every time I booted up (Update Application problem etc). It doesn't appear in the Add/Remove programs list, so you will have to find it in c:\program files\common files and delete it all by hand. Fortunately XP at least retains a decent search function for finding anything pareto*.*. Simply delete all pareto directories, files and programs, especially pareto_update.exe. Then run a registry repair utility (I use free_windows_registry_repair, program name is regpair.exe), to fix all the links to it. Empty the recycle bin and reboot. Your machine may well start up much faster! (Oddly, MBAM did not find it; but I would describe it as a PUP--i.e. probably unwanted program.)

Installed by RegCure Pro software on my Windows 7. Apparently used to update RegCure Pro files. No lengthly experience with this software, BUT I know that it deleted windows screensaver photo files and a label printer file I needed when I allowed it to determine "trash" files. I since turned off several scans. Not sure if REGCUREPRO is really worth the cost.

Best practices for resolving Pareto_Update issues

A clean and tidy computer is the key requirement for avoiding problems with Pareto_Update. This means running a scan for malware, cleaning your hard drive using cleanmgr and sfc /scannow, uninstalling programs that you no longer need, checking for Autostart programs (using msconfig) and enabling Windows' Automatic Update. Always remember to perform periodic backups, or at least to set restore points.

Should you experience an actual problem, try to recall the last thing you did, or the last thing you installed before the problem appeared for the first time. Use the resmon command to identify the processes that are causing your problem. Even for serious problems, rather than reinstalling Windows, you are better off repairing of your installation or, for Windows 8 and later versions, executing the DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth command. This allows you to repair the operating system without losing data.

To help you analyze the Pareto_Update.exe process on your computer, the following programs have proven to be helpful: Security Task Manager displays all running Windows tasks, including embedded hidden processes, such as keyboard and browser monitoring or Autostart entries. A unique security risk rating indicates the likelihood of the process being potential spyware, malware or a Trojan. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware detects and removes sleeping spyware, adware, Trojans, keyloggers, malware and trackers from your hard drive.
