It is part of the install of DVD X Copy from what I can tell.
Its for DVD decoding, used by DVD copy prgs such as DVD XCopy Platinum, etc. harmless & necessary for these prgs to work

I can t not Find Any Emulator software running anywhere .. except for this pcouffin thing !
Low-level CD-ROM driver installed by ConvertXtoDVD, is buggy and makes your system BSOD with PFN_LIST_CORRUPT 0x000004E error. Get rid of this software, there are hundreds of alternatives, besides an AVI-encoding application has no rights to start screwing with low-level cdrom drivers anyway.
when installing CloneDVD this installation wrote to this it had previously expired as a trial ver., I thought to uninstall and clean registry, then reinstall..wondering where the time counter was kept....I still don't know... try using What's Running prgm to see how anything else accesses pcouffin.sys
part of DVDFab Platinum DVD ripper software

Installed with DvdFab
I tested Ideal DVD Copy a few times. I'm in the habit of looking into "My Computer" program setup folders for each program I install. The first couple of times I installed Ideal DVD Copy, the patin couffin driver was not amongst its driver list. The third time it was. It wasn't until I had to do a restore to reset my PC that I found out the patin couffin driver would'nt allow me to do so. What it does for all dvd copy software is the same thing. Why, because when you have to do a restore to reset your defaults, it also resets your trial period for the dvd copy program, and you can continue using the trial program beyond its trial period if you continually restore your PC each time you use the trial program. That's why DVD Copy developers installed the Patin Couffin (VSO) software. If you don't believe me, install Patin Couffin and try to restore your PC to an earlier date. I have XP and my main drive was C:, but when I try to use restore, it tells me that it couldn't restore E:. And now my only choice is to format my drive again.

Best practices for resolving pcouffin issues

A clean and tidy computer is the key requirement for avoiding problems with pcouffin. This means running a scan for malware, cleaning your hard drive using cleanmgr and sfc /scannow, uninstalling programs that you no longer need, checking for Autostart programs (using msconfig) and enabling Windows' Automatic Update. Always remember to perform periodic backups, or at least to set restore points.

Should you experience an actual problem, try to recall the last thing you did, or the last thing you installed before the problem appeared for the first time. Use the resmon command to identify the processes that are causing your problem. Even for serious problems, rather than reinstalling Windows, you are better off doing a repair of your installation, or in the case of Windows 8, executing the DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth command. This allows you to repair the operating system without losing data.

To help you analyze the pcouffin.sys process on your computer, the following programs have proven to be helpful: Security Task Manager displays all running Windows tasks, including embedded hidden processes, such as keyboard and browser monitoring or Autostart entries. A unique security risk rating indicates the likelihood of the process being potential spyware, malware or a Trojan. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware detects and removes sleeping spyware, adware, Trojans, keyloggers, malware and trackers from your hard drive.
