What is PSDrt.exe?

The genuine PSDrt.exe file is a software component of Infineon Trusted Platform Module (TPM) by Infineon Technologies AG.
"PSDrt.exe" is one of twelve processes making up the TPM Professional Package by Infineon Technologies AG. It executes with the local user's privileges, usually within the context of its parent process, "ifxspmgt.exe." Trusted Platform Module (TPM) software is not a proprietary Infineon concept but is an international standard, (ISO/IEC 11889 beginning in 2009). It requires the computer system to have a TPM microcontroller, presently a distinct chip but capable of integration into a motherboard. Usually this technology is reserved to professional, industrial, or defense grade systems, as in Hewlett-Packard's Protect Tools Embedded Security. Therefore, neither "PSDrt.exe" nor any other TPM component should be stopped or uninstalled as the side-effects could make the unit useless and it is probably enterprise or government property. At the most basic level, by burning unique identifying codes into the TPM at manufacture and using these codes in encryption algorithms, any network can verify remotely that it is an authorized unit and its software has not been changed. "PSDrt.exe" is part of Infineon's "Personal Secure Disk" software which creates a separate region on the hard disk, (usually set up by an administrator), which encrypts all files stored to it using the keys on the TPM controller chip and is invisible to all networks and on the unit itself unless a password is entered. Infineon, a global corporation based in Munich, Germany, was created April 1, 1999, when Siemens AG spun off its semiconductor operations as a legal entity. (In 2006, Infineon further spun off its memory manufacturing as Qimonda AG, but Qimonda was delisted from the NYSE in 2009). Infineon's many products include supplying TPM hardware and software on an OEM basis to multiple laptop manufacturers.

Best practices for resolving PSDrt issues

A clean and tidy computer is the key requirement for avoiding problems with PSDrt. This means running a scan for malware, cleaning your hard drive using 1cleanmgr and 2sfc /scannow, 3uninstalling programs that you no longer need, checking for Autostart programs (using 4msconfig) and enabling Windows' 5Automatic Update. Always remember to perform periodic backups, or at least to set restore points.

Should you experience an actual problem, try to recall the last thing you did, or the last thing you installed before the problem appeared for the first time. Use the 6resmon command to identify the processes that are causing your problem. Even for serious problems, rather than reinstalling Windows, you are better off repairing of your installation or, for Windows 8 and later versions, executing the 7DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth command. This allows you to repair the operating system without losing data.

To help you analyze the PSDrt.exe process on your computer, the following programs have proven to be helpful: ASecurity Task Manager displays all running Windows tasks, including embedded hidden processes, such as keyboard and browser monitoring or Autostart entries. A unique security risk rating indicates the likelihood of the process being potential spyware, malware or a Trojan. BMalwarebytes Anti-Malware detects and removes sleeping spyware, adware, Trojans, keyloggers, malware and trackers from your hard drive.
