What is TPONSCR.exe?

The genuine TPONSCR.exe file is a software component of Lenovo On Screen Display by Lenovo Group.
"TPONSCR.exe" is a startup program used in some Windows 7 models of Lenovo ThinkPad notebooks, the central driver for On Screen Display (OSD), an accessibility option for hearing-impaired users indicating events on the screen such as muting the microphone, turning off wireless radio for Airplane Mode, or pressing shortcut hot keys. An accompanying suite of programs, formerly installed with the Configuration utility automatically but now requiring separate installation, handle specific subsets of on-screen display, such as "shtctky.exe" for short-cut hot keys. Microsoft included native OSD in Windows 8 and these were not needed. The installation subpath of "C:\Program Files" varies among models, usually being "\Lenovo\HOTKEY\". Selecting "Lenovo On-Screen Display" in the Control Panel's uninstall applet removes the entire suite. Lenovo, founded in Beijing in 1984 and expanded in 2004 by acquiring IBM's Personal Computer Division, is now China's largest computer manufacturer and is #231 of the Fortune 500.

can be either: if it's in '.../program files/lenovo/hotkey' it's the real one, if it's in a window directory and creating a file named 'verison.dll' in the roaming data folder, then it's most likely an adware trojan. right-click the entry in task manager and choose 'open file location' to find out where it is being run from.
I have a ThinkPad with this cpu consuming process running
This file basically shows you the volume levels, both the pop up and tray icon. Ending this process will prevent the pc from drawing the image(bar, graph etc) and remove the tray icon. Not recommended if you are not sure about keyboard hot keys
Good file Provided by Lenovo Think Pad Technologies TM. It provides an onscreen display of your volume whenever you use the built in volume buttons. If you get an error every time you use a built in volume key saying that tponscr.exe has crashed but would like to have this onscreen display go to the link in this description.

Useful, shows the onscreen info for volume, display, presentation etc. No need to disable.
Think Pad Utility "Thinkpad on Screen", hence tponscr..
The tponscr.exe process is used to configure and use the hotkeys found on IBM Thinkpads. If this process is not running the Hotkeys will not work, so unless it is causing problems on your system you should leave this process running.

The ThinkVantage button will not work for Lenovo users, preventing you from entering a pre-boot Rescue and Recovery operation. Would not remove it if you own a Lenovo.
