my laptop slows down over the weekend, and only monday have i found out a process that sucks up all my cpu and it is this alteris agent. i think guys at altiris made this stupid agent program so poorly, now that symantec is buying them, lets see if improvements will come out.

To make it go away: assuming you have admin rights on your PC you can just disable the 'Altris Agent' and 'Altris Client' services. And the IT bods wont be able to monitor your PC, and possibly be a little upset...

If it is on your work PC and you remove it, you will upset your IT security people. Leave it alone. It is needed to push updates to your machine. If it is one your home PC, then it is probably a virus/trojan and you should have been running some kind of anti-virus application. See what happens when you don't? Before I kill this process on a 2 GHz machine with 2 GB of RAM, my computer has the performance of a virus-laden 386 machine - seconds can pass before a keystroke appears. After I kill this process, my machine becomes useful.

Just one of the agents in the Altiris Suite of desktop management . If your company uses Altiris then it's supposed to be there. If you're have CPU issues with it then notify your IT help desk. This product costs upwards of $100k to implement so casually removing it because you, the user, don't know what it is, is likely to inspire the curses of your IT dept.

It's installed by the IT folks, and lets them spy on and update your computer. The stupid thing runs at high priority... if your corporate computer is running slowly and accessing the disk, this may be the reason.
