I was a recent beta tester for Executive Software's new and revolutionary Diskeeper's 2007 version. Bottom line: this is Diskeeper's active background running program that watches and defrags your hard drive as you work, tuning it to perfection in the 2007 Pro Premium version. DK technology works much better than the MS Defrag utulity, I might add. (Shame on those of you who jumped the gun and called this a dangerous file. A simple Google search would have alleviated your worries.)

It is a most excellent program designed to defragment your hard drives and can also defrag. any of your removable drives. Set it to run manually and it will serve you better than any other program of it's kind. Try it , you will love it.

Diskeeper isn't a security risk, but this process seems to be responsible for major performance-loss in games. Disable if unsure, and enable when you want to actually run Diskeeper.

The DKService.exe windows service is vital as it handles inter-component communications. It also addresses external communications (such as checking for product updates or transmitting report data to a Diskeeper Administrator console). The Diskeeper Service is set by default to "start" when the system boots up. By default, Diskeeper is also set to log actions of this service in the Windows Application Event Log. The preferred interface is up to the user. It's not vital, so you can turn it off. But you have to run it when starting Disk Keeper again.

If you elected to have your disk(s) defragmented automatically then this program will be running. If you don't like it, turn off auto defrag in Diskeeper.

If you have any new versions of Diskeeper this is the process that allows it to defragment using the idle system resources. It may look at though it is using vital resources if you check it when your system is idle, but that is it merely using what is not being used. To stop is from using idle resources simply change your options in diskeeper.

It's the Diskeeper service, indeed. It does open port 31038. Blocking it with a firewall does NOT affect Diskeeper's functionality.
