This file giveIO.sys is used and installed by Speedfan and other programs. It worked for me for a year, but eventually caused my system to hang on it, including save mode, last known good config etc. Even my Windows XP boot-CD hung and would not let me into the recovery console. This file seems to cause problems with certain Windows and iTunes updates as well as USB devices. I was able to recover by unplugging any and all USB devices (including internal), booting and uninstalling Speedfan. The file itself poses no security risk, but a severe incompatibility, that's why I rated it 5.

Allows direct port i/o on windows nt/xp/vista. Not dangerous by itself, poorly written programs that use direct i/o can cause system instability.

Allows win98 style acess to LPT ports. Great if you want to use the LPT port as a GPIO device (inp and outp instructions). There is a small security risc but as long as you know what you are doing it no problem.

It is possibly correct that it is installed by SpeedFan. I installed this recently and noticed this today after my computer froze and then refused to boot, even in safe mode. I repeatedly saw that giveio.sys was the last driver attempting to load in safe mode before crashing. So I booted into Windows 98 (have both for emergencies) & renamed it and then was able to boot in safe mode and restore ( just to be safe ). But I have been using SpeedFan for a week now, dunno why it suddenly caused problems. The latest thing that I installed was FeedReader though how they're related I really can't see.

Mine was added by a Quicktime update and totaly crashed my system. Removal looks easy enough, but as the system locks even in safe mode, can be a real pain to correct sometimes.

I had the Speedfan problem too. It was working fine for months, until an automatic Windows XP update caused it to conflict. The solution was to uninstall Speedfan entirely, through Add/remove Programs. Rebooting afterwards worked fine.

windows XP and certain other OSs restrict access to the serial, parallel, and other ports. Many programs therefore have to use this sys file to access those ports, rather than having their own device drivers, with dlls, to access external hardware.

It is a widely-used driver to allow user-mode programs to access hardware registers and I/O ports, such as for controlling fan speed or monitoring temperatures. It is generally safe, although since it uses undocumented kernel calls it may cause instability on future versions of Windows. If that's the case, or you don't use any programs which need direct hardware access, you may freely remove this driver (from the Non-Plug-and-Play Devices branch of Device Manager--don't just delete the file). Otherwise it poses no threat.

device driver for NT 4.0/2000/XP The giveIO tool enables low-level access to I/O ports for programs under Windows 2000 and XP. This is needed for some software that communicates through LPT ports. (Some people say that UserPort is better for Windows XP
