I believe that Sony tells you that it is essential because they need it to detect if you are using a Sony battery. If you disable it you will be able to purchase non Sony products. Has anyone actually done this? If so, did anything terrible happen?

sbmgr.exe is a process which belongs to Sony's ISB Utility. This program is a non-essential process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

I dont know much, but it came freshly installed on my Sony Vaio VGN-FE660G. It seems to be related to power management., and not a virus.

checks whether battery is Sony original and nags

it checks to see if your battery is sony brand. if not it'll give you an error message and put your laptop in hibernate. i know because i bought a generic battery and couldn't turn on my laptop until i turned isbmgr off

It is a legitamate program for Sony Vaio Power Mngmnt, but what it does is makes the laptop UNUSABLE (forces laptop into hibernation after 1 min, even if u use the ac adapter!!) if it detects a non sony battery!!! Its a con to force you to only purchase sony batteries, get rid of it, laptop will work fine without it!

Sony Viao VGN 290. Fan seems to be tied into this utility if the driver and this sofware are corrupted your fan will not work, F10 reinstall seems the only option as Sony Driver site and support are not so hot.
