After defrag my Win 2000 Pro SP4 NL windows said it had to close mmc.exe because of some wrongs it did. This computer has NO Internet connection,and i installed Win 2000 Pro as a upgrade for Win 98 SE. Because it has no internet connection,i do not think mmc.exe has anything to do with a virus or spyware.

with my 64bit AMD PC running windows 2000 pro load, running defrag software on my large drive (mine 250G) to defrag, I got mmc.exe error and my system was totally crashed (1st crash caused me a total Win 2000reload) and (2nd crash which I'm debugging because I made ERD but it still have not recover. One change made to system.sys helped a little but still need nvidia driver nv4_mini. Do not defrag unless you make backup of your files.

nothing. somehow it got listed in my antivirus block list (either by the program itself or my own ignorance) for two weeks and i didn't see any adverse effect on the pc

Never heard of anyone having a problem with mmc, pops up in task manager when defraging then goes away.

i dunno what it does, apparently has to do with defrag and such. my computer constantly read 100% CPU usage, and lagged constantly until i terminated it. terminating it got rid of 95% of my cpu usage and now my computer doesn't lag at all.....

If you use Ctrl-Alt Del an have the taskmanager window on screen the process mmc.exe is running. No harm. I have no problems with it

It's part of the windows defragger tool. Saw it in my process list when I paused my defragging, googled, it, NOT harmful at all. Unless of course it is a hidden version.

MMC is a windows system file, but the file name is used by virii. Check the location of the file to insure whether or not it is the legitimate file, or not.

I have been trying to run defrag and in task manager, there are multiple mmc.exe. I believe that it is a virus in disguise becuase many of my prgrmas have been malfunctioning and the problem is worsening.

If its a part of win2k and winxp why the hell does Vista have it then? :P Oh I forget Vista is a huge compiled OS consisting of all windows from 95 stacked up to XP _ Anyway I just tested it I have 2 running on Vista just like the rest of the stuiped copied .exes M$ makes for fun on Vista. 1 likes to pop up when I use Event Viewer that seems very important to me but idk what the other is doing? :\ and no it's not a virus it's legit copy :\

@ nuetral: You're right, asoon as I closed the services window, it went away...I got a little nervous because it wasnt there a few minutes ago, then I open task mgr again and there it is! read everyones comments and came across yours and..and its gone, so thank you for mentioning that!

MMC is a file used in servers to manage users and group policies, there is no risk involved with the program and it also an inbuilt feature of XP, Vista and Windows 7 server editions and Home Editions to simply view and get a taste of this file just go Start RUN MMC It stands for Microsoft Management Center. I know that this program can be used to control others on a home network without then realizing it. I would consider it non essential unless the computer is being used as part of a work group in a business setting. I have had 2 computers crash and had some indiscriminate use of minor's computers in my household to dump files that were mostly pornographic
