Speed Disk will not run if you deny it in Zonealarm. You must shut down all internet Activity. It will only become a CPU hog if you manually start it or you've setup Speedisk as a scheduled task.

Crashes everytime I leave my computer idle for more than an hour, therefore not required if it's not running most of the time anyway.
   

Its a tool for defragging your hard drive of course its gonna make the hard drive churn and slow your computer down. The purpose of it is to defrag the hard drive so your computer can access data faster AFTER its done running. Set the freaking thing to manual and run it manually before you go to the crapper. When ya get back it will be done

Google confirms this is a process of Norton Utilities Speed Disk (a disk defragment program) Leave it alone. Speed disk will operate at 20% frag level by default or at any other frag level you set within Utilities Scheduling

i have this process nopdb.exe on my computer and I have never used Norton anything. I know better than to use Norton.

Also in NIS 2007. Never, ever, run speed disk on an home XP/SP2 NTFS system. It fragments every file on the drive near as I can tell. Never puts them back together.

A norton utility, i thought so, just did a quick google check because its causing my computer to make "reading disc whirring" noises, although it does not degrade performance, it use 4% of my AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+

It is not dangerous at all. You can set Speed Disk up to run on a schedule and thereby cause this file to run at another time.

Not essential. Check AdministrativeTools/Services for "Speed Disk service" set Properties/Startup type = Disabled. You can always run it manually. If theres no service Spedd disk then probably its a malware.

Norton Speed disk I always get errors , usually the schedule, and the you cant terminate in the task manager, norton services usually say access denied

If you don't like bloatware or have a very slow system try these free options and programs. Many times malware disguises itself as any process use an antispyware program(Spybot S&D)(Security Task Manager) or an antirootkit tool. Google and Wikipedia is also good start.
