What is CodeMeter.exe?

CodeMeter.exe is an executable file that is part of the CodeMeter Runtime Server software developed by WIBU-SYSTEMS. This software is typically located in the C:\Program Files (x86)\CodeMeter\Runtime\bin directory.

CodeMeter Runtime Server is a tool used for software licensing and protection. It provides a secure environment for the execution of licensed software and prevents unauthorized use or copying. The CodeMeter Runtime Kit is a part of this system, providing the necessary components for the implementation and management of software licenses.

CodeMeter.exe and the associated software are necessary if you are using software that requires CodeMeter for license management. It ensures that the software runs correctly and that licensing terms are adhered to. I believe Codemeter was installed on my system (unknown to me) when I installed a demo of Propellerhead Reason (a popular music synthesizer). I think it provides a hardware key (dongle) to allow purchasers of the application to run it with full capabilities (the demo will not allow saves).
  Jim F.
I know I did not install it, and in fact did NOT install any other software on the file creation date of any files in the CodeMeter folder. It showed up on a day I did not install ANY programs or browser addons.
  Eric Wright
I didn't install this program into my PC. I do not trust it at all.
  Eric Lam
This copy protection program was installed together with ZIP Repair Pro (ziprepair.com). It was installed without notice and must be rated as spyware and backdoor.

It's installed along Bosch'es catalgoue proggram ESI tronic v.2.0
  Michał
installed on my PC with a parts catalogue for a German OEM. seems to be used as/in conjunction as a DRM system for the catalogue PDF library
  Jadyn
it installs itself .. i do not trust this app

Monitors Program activities through firewall. When it installed itself on my PC it opened ports in Firewall, it also runs as a background service. I hate these intruder programs.
  Pete
My installation of codemeter was installed when I installed an NVidia GeForce graphics driver package. There is no option to remove it separately.
  Dave
it was downloaded with 2020 design systems which are horrid clunky programs I removed it as it was slowing my computer down

Program zainstalowany bez mojej wiedzy podczas instalacji dema Mastercam X7. Installed during Mastercam x7 demo installation without my knowledge.
  ŝasica
It was installed without any notice or prompt and started running in the background. The shady way in which it was installed not to mention the fact that it can monitor applications spells trouble to me.
  Abhinav Singh
this was installed on my pc wenn i installed Recover My Files i rate es unwanted because installed without my permission and could be dangerous too.

I'm pretty sure Code Meter came with a demo I was trying out. It doesn't leave an uninstall file, so it's no good to try to uninstall in the conventional way. If you go to the program file folder in X86 called CodeMeter, you can manually delete the folders, bottom up, after you stop the processes it has running in Task Manager.
  PaulyAmorous
i don't know how it got into my computer. i am 1000000% SURE i didn't install it, and i read EVERY CheckBox i see when i install every software. not only that, but i'm also SURE i didn't install ANY new software in the past month, so maybe i got from some security breach in both my UPDATED Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7... all this brings me to think that it is a very dangerous program, or AT LEAST a spyware\trojan of some kind.
  Eitan Arbel
Comes preinstalled with some PC's, therefore, I'm inclined to believe it's bloatware/crapware.

Installed with Rockwell (Logix Studio) activation software. Non-harmful licensing software (though may be installed without knowledge, it is safe). Is installed as a Service as well.
  Kevin W.
Codemeter.exe showed up in my task manager without me having installed it or installed any software that would use codemeter such as this propellerhead reason thing. Does not show up in add/remove programs. I don't trust it and I want it gone.
  Roger H
It also changes your Windows firewall settings, so check them and block them.
  Bill D
Codemeter is installed by Mastercam software. I dislike these kinds of programs, but some software will not run without them. It is a software validation license program. It is mentioned several times here on the Mastercam site: http://www.mastercam.com/en-us/support-downloads-drivers-and-applets

Andre is correct. The file is part of a copy protection dongle. Our desktops have it to use 2020 Design software. The license USB dongle needs to be plugged in to use the software.
  Dale
Installed with recover my files v5. Licencing application.
  Hoogle McDoogal   (further information)
It popped up after a windows automatic 8.1 update

It's possible there are some other variations of files called Codemeter but in my case, Codemeter is a copy protection application that works in conjunction with a USB dongle (you can confirm this at www.codemeter.com). My dongle is required in order to work with Magix Samplitude recording software. Codemeter (when properly installed) will show up as a drive with it's own drive letter. I guess you could say it's similar to iLok (they both provide software copy protection). In my case, I would rate it safe and important. If it's not causing any problems, leave it alone. If it bothers you, remove it and see what happens. In all cases make sure you have a recent C drive backup in case you need to go back in time ;-)

I think it was installed without notice me when I've installed the software Recover My Files V5 the 26th october 2015. It's very unfair from the editor getdata.com

after misteriously appeared on my pc, Microsoft Office didn't recognized my licence, therefore blocking my use of the Office suite...

Codemeter service was installed with Graphisoft's Archicad 19

Was installed with ZIP repair pro without asking me! Dangerous!

Came with a popular free DMX controller software. Martin Showdesigner; it is a critical program to run the software

C:\PROGRAM FILES (X86)\CODEMETER\Runtime\bin\CODEMETER.EXE attempted to set itself as an invisible autorun program in Windows 10 x64 following a reboot after trying out the demo of Recover My Files v5, it must have installed itself as part of the program's licensing / activation mechanism. I blocked the autorun and immediately UNINSTALLED ALL TRACES USING REVO UNINSTALLER PRO (which I use to TRACE all program installations for complete removal any time in the future)
  BRENDON F
This program seems to provide permission to use Mastercam on my work computer, like a key dongle. Eset Endpoint Antivirus does not consider it a threat.

CodeMeter are hardware protection keys for ArchiCAD and other Graphisoft product

CodeMeter is part of a protection system (Dongle or virtual Software-like license) to prevent illegal use of Software. Its trustable and recommend to have it if you buy a Software which is licensed and protected with this system. Software Vendors like Propellerhead use this "Third Party Software" and integrate the security of codemeter into their program. After removing Codemeter the purchased Programm wont work. his .exe is Essential. I also first thought that its a Backdoor tool but it don't. But it seems that some Dongle Hackers try to distribute faked Codemeter.exe.

code meter seems to have been installed as part of the Salesforce outlook plugin.. the outlook/salesforce link will not run with out allowing it access.
  Robert Blake
This is not spyware. It is a simple tool used to verify your software is licensed to run. If you uninstall CodeMeter the software it is protecting will quit working. It can be uninstalled by following these directions https://www.wibu.com/us/faq-codemeter/s/detail/how-can-i-uninstall-codemeter.html

Codemeter comes installed as a necessary part of other software such as Mastercam. It allows the other software to run properly.

When I updated my Bosch ESI package this was codemeter was installed along with it. On that basis I assume it serves some useful function. The software update came on DVD direct from Bosch so I although it made me a bit uneasy when I saw it I don't see how it could be dangerous.
  Peter Miles
It was installed on my PC along with with Autocad

CodeMeter has been installed with Rockwell automation products

Codemeter is a legitimate program as others have described as a dongle for program licensing. In my case it was installed as part of Allen Bradley's PLC and HMI programming software packages. "CmFAS Assistant, CmDongle, CodeMeter, CodeMeter Control Center, and WIBU are trademarks of WIBU-SYSTEMS AG in the United States". If you search the Rockwell Automation site, link included in this post, for "CodeMeter" you will see it is well documented in their literature.

User Account Control just popped up and asked if I wanted to allow CodeMeter to make changes (I haven't installed any new software recently). It won't accept 'no' for an answer. Publisher's certificate was valid from 26/02/2013 to 28/05/2015 (it's 20/03/2018 as I type this) I'm inclined to remove it and see what breaks...
  Chris Hopkins
I noticed CodeMeter installed after using Seagate Evaluation Version of the SRS Technician Hard Drive Repair program. After removing the Seagate program, CodeMeter remained installed.

CodeMeter is part of a licensing system by WiBu Systems, which might be used by several applications to grant access to a software or parts of it.

installed alongside archicad

It comes with Leica's LAS X Small software (installer: LAS_X_Small_3.3.0_16799_Setup.exe), which is used to analyze microscope pictures. In their software installed on the actual microscopes (full version), Leica uses dongle for copy protection. However, this is the "small" version, which you can freely install on any computer and analyze your pictures later so you don't hog up the computer used to control the actual microscope. Despite this, the installer suggests installing Codemeter although it should not be necessary for this free version. Puzzled, I unclicked the box for Codemeter, because I reasoned it is not necessary. Despite this, Codemeter was installed as I discovered the following day when I sat down on my computer. CPU temp was slightly elevated and CPU usage was constantly around 15 % instead of 10x less it is supposed to be when idle. I was puzzled why I didn't see the culprit in Windows Task Manager so I downloaded Process Explorer and there is was, Codemeter hogging 1 core despite asking it not to be installed and despite the Leica software no longer running. Needless to say I uninstalled Codemeter right away as that kind of behind the back behaviour is highly suspicious.
  John Oldman
CodeMeter is used to provide licenses for a number of commercial software packages and without it, many that depend upon it won't run or won't function correctly. It can function as purely software or in concert with a hardware dongle. Although it should be made clear to the user when and why it is installed, this is the responsibility of the software vendor. CodeMeter itself is not malicious. It's produced by Wibu Systems (see link) and normally installed alongside an application which uses it.
  Andrew   (further information)
I tried some Freeware but I didn't install CodeMeter specifically. It seems to be benign but anything installed without permission should be regarded as potentially hostile.
  Simon Fanshawe
its licensing key software. totally safe and comes bundled with software that requires it for use. If it's on your machine - removing it might cause a headache when you now have missing software licenses you paid out for which used it.
  Liz Pantelis
We have Codemeter running on one of our license servers for Mastercam. At least for Mastercam it's what handles the licenses.
  Dylan Kolasa
It somehow installed itself on my system yesterday. Today my rig refused to boot with "windows missing" error and after i fixed it, went straight to the running processes. This little bastard was there and was communicating through ports 1433 and 1434. Immediately shut it down, deleted it and did a manual reg cleaning along with closing those ports again. I haven't installed any new software for at least a month now and yet somehow yesterday it landed on my rig. Haven't plugged any outside flash drives as well, so it's still a complete mystery to me how it got on my system.

Best practices for resolving CodeMeter issues

A clean and tidy computer is the key requirement for avoiding problems with CodeMeter. This means running a scan for malware, cleaning your hard drive using 1cleanmgr and 2sfc /scannow, 3uninstalling programs that you no longer need, checking for Autostart programs (using 4msconfig) and enabling Windows' 5Automatic Update. Always remember to perform periodic backups, or at least to set restore points.

Should you experience an actual problem, try to recall the last thing you did, or the last thing you installed before the problem appeared for the first time. Use the 6resmon command to identify the processes that are causing your problem. Even for serious problems, rather than reinstalling Windows, you are better off repairing of your installation or executing the 7DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth command. This allows you to repair the operating system without losing data.

To get your computer running as fast as it did on day one, you can 8reset your PC. Your personal files will remain intact, but any programs you installed will need to be reinstalled.

To help you analyze the CodeMeter.exe process on your computer, the following programs have proven to be helpful: ASecurity Task Manager displays all running Windows tasks, including embedded hidden processes, such as keyboard and browser monitoring or Autostart entries. A unique security risk rating indicates the likelihood of the process being potential spyware, malware or a Trojan. A good Bantivirus software detects and removes sleeping spyware, adware, Trojans, keyloggers, malware and trackers from your hard drive.
