What is rstrui.exe?

The genuine rstrui.exe file is a software component of Microsoft Windows Operating System by .
"Rstrui.exe" is a Microsoft file that should be in "C:\Windows\System32\restore". It can be started from the command prompt or by selecting "System Restore" from the Start menu. It should not be removed. It presents the User Interface (or Wizard in Win10) which lists system restore points and allows creating new ones, allows selecting one, and answers basic FAQ's. Only workstation desktop versions, (Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10), of the Microsoft Windows Operating System offer System Restore. (It first appeared in Windows ME but Vista changed it.) Server versions (2003, 2008, 2012, etc.) have a comparable but different feature and if "rstrui.exe" is present it may be malware. After choosing a restore point, "rstrui.exe" can list apps or drivers installed or uninstalled since creating it. Confirming the choice causes "rstrui.exe" to set a registry RunOnce value and reboot the computer. Upon reboot, the actual System Restore engine ("srsvc.dll") begins the process.
