What is ABService.exe?

ABService.exe is an executable file that is part of the AOMEI Backupper software developed by AOMEI Tech. This file is typically located in the C:\Program Files (x86)\AOMEI Backupper directory. The ".exe" extension on a filename indicates an executable file which, in some cases, could harm your computer.

AOMEI Backupper is a backup software designed for both Windows PC and Server users to backup and restore system and files. It makes file backup, system backup, partition backup, and disk backup easier with its user-friendly interface and high technologies. The ABService.exe is a component of this software that manages scheduled tasks.

ABService.exe is necessary if you are using AOMEI Backupper and have scheduled backup tasks. It ensures that your backup tasks run at the scheduled times, even if the main application is closed. Like any executable file, it has the potential to harm your computer. If you notice that ABService.exe is causing problems on your computer (like high CPU usage), or if your antivirus software flags it as a threat, it may be a sign that your computer is infected with a virus or malware disguised as the ABService.exe file. In such cases, you should remove or quarantine the file. Always make sure that your antivirus software is up-to-date and regularly scan your system for potential threats.

It is a TSR program that seemingly can't be stopped with Task Manager. I tried and it immediately restarts.

The service does seem to open network ports. There's no documentation explaining what this is for. Looking at the firewall rules created, they allow all tcp and udp packets to ABService.exe. I blocked everything and nothing seems to have gone wrong. Hopefully their support responds as it's a good backup solution.

I found this service runs even if you do not enable scheduled backups within the program itself. I disabled the service under the Windows services and do not appear to have had any issues. I just wonder why it would run when there is no schedule enabled within the program..

Update: Some more findings from my last post. This service appears to be triggered by the main app and remain residents even if you close the app; it can't be shut down in task manager - you have to stop it under Services. If you set the service to disabled it will also start again and be set to automatic when Windows boots, which I find quote odd. However if you set the service to manual it won't start and will only run if the app itself is run and again, the service will remain resident when you close the app and has to be stopped under services as killing it in task manager won't work, but on reboot the service will not run unless you run the main app. I do not know exactly what this service does or what impact the manual setting has one the app's backup schedule (which I don't want or need). I don't like the way this service is re-enabled itself without one's knowledge or consent, in turn consuming memory and resources and causing concern regarding what it is actually doing hence I have elevated this as seems to be dangerous for the time being. Maybe it's some kind of scheduled updating service? I tested with the same results under Win 7 x86 and Win 11 x64. Hope my info helps.
