What is checksur.exe?

The genuine checksur.exe file is a software component of Microsoft Windows Operating System by .
"CheckSUR.exe" was a Microsoft utility for Windows OS older than 8. It stood for "Check System Update Readiness." It had to be downloaded from Microsoft by their engineers in a package including a payload of corruption-repair and/or update files, creating the "C:\Windows\checksur" subfolder with the utility and the package contents. Its function was to check system files for corruption, optionally fixing it if its payload contained the files it needed. It ran automatically after it and its payload installed, and had no command-line interface to be run manually. It logged messages in "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\checksur.log". Starting with Windows 8, Microsoft replaced CheckSUR with "Inbox Corruption Repair" which was part of Windows, via the Deployment Image Servicing and Management Tool (DISM), no longer requiring a separate download. In July 2015, Microsoft created an "Updated CheckSUR" download for Windows 7/2008 R2, which gave those users that capability also.
