What is java.exe?

java.exe is an executable file that is part of the Java Platform Standard Edition (SE) software, originally developed by Sun Microsystems and now maintained by Oracle. This file is essential for running programs developed with Java.

Java Platform SE Binary is a framework that allows users to run applications written in the Java programming language. It includes the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and an interpreter/loader (java). The JRE provides the libraries, Java virtual machine, and other components necessary to run Java applets and applications.

java.exe is needed to interpret and run Java-based applications on your computer. Without it, any software or web content developed in Java will not function correctly. It's a crucial component of the Java development environment.

Under normal circumstances, there's no need to remove java.exe. If it's causing problems like high CPU usage or if you suspect it's related to a virus or malware, you might consider removing it. If you don't use any Java-based applications or web content, you might not need it. Always ensure to remove it properly to avoid system errors.

Note: Before removing java.exe, make sure it's not a malware in disguise. Some viruses mimic legitimate files to avoid detection. Use a reliable antivirus software to scan your system.

Known file sizes on Windows 10/11/7 are 135,168 bytes (11% of all occurrences), 13,179,660 bytes and 59 more variants. file.net/process/java.exe.html
Java.exe is not a Windows core file. The process listens for or sends data on open ports to a LAN or the Internet. The program has no visible window. The file has a digital signature. Java.exe is able to monitor applications. Therefore the technical security rating is 46% dangerous; however you should also read the user reviews.

Uninstalling this variant: You may also do the following:
  1) completely remove Java(TM) 6 Update (Control Panel ⇒ Uninstall a Program)
  2) go to the support area of the Oracle website
  3) check the vendor’s website for a newer version.

External information from Paul Collins:

Important: Some malware camouflages itself as java.exe, particularly when located in the C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32 folder, for example Backdoor:Win32/Xtrat.A or VirTool:Win32/VBInject.gen!GQ (detected by Microsoft), and Trojan.Win32.Inject.bumg or Trojan.Win32.VBKrypt.difl (detected by Kaspersky). Therefore, you should check the java.exe process on your PC to see if it is a threat. We recommend Security Task Manager for verifying your computer's security. Java.exe appears whenever I do a multi-hour copy from one partition to another. When it shows up, no other activity is reported.

Best practices for resolving java issues

A clean and tidy computer is the key requirement for avoiding problems with java. This means running a scan for malware, cleaning your hard drive using 1cleanmgr and 2sfc /scannow, 3uninstalling programs that you no longer need, checking for Autostart programs (using 4msconfig) and enabling Windows' 5Automatic Update. Always remember to perform periodic backups, or at least to set restore points.

Should you experience an actual problem, try to recall the last thing you did, or the last thing you installed before the problem appeared for the first time. Use the 6resmon command to identify the processes that are causing your problem. Even for serious problems, rather than reinstalling Windows, you are better off repairing of your installation or executing the 7DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth command. This allows you to repair the operating system without losing data.

To get your computer running as fast as it did on day one, you can 8reset your PC. Your personal files will remain intact, but any programs you installed will need to be reinstalled.

To help you analyze the java.exe process on your computer, the following programs have proven to be helpful: ASecurity Task Manager displays all running Windows tasks, including embedded hidden processes, such as keyboard and browser monitoring or Autostart entries. A unique security risk rating indicates the likelihood of the process being potential spyware, malware or a Trojan. A good Bantivirus software detects and removes sleeping spyware, adware, Trojans, keyloggers, malware and trackers from your hard drive.
