"Lync.exe" is Microsoft's primary executable module for its enterprise instant messaging client, having both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. It resides in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\lync.exe", (or "C:\Program Files(x86)\..." if 32-bit Lync.exe is used on 64-bit Windows.) Depending on when it was installed on a PC, it may be the client for Lync 2010, (released January 2011), Lync 2013, (released in 2012), or Skype for Business 2016, (released 22 September 2015). Skype for Business 2016 merges Lync and Skype software capabilities but still uses the "lync.exe" name for its primary module.
