What is net1.exe?

Microsoft introduced "net1.exe" in Windows 2000 as a temporary fix for "Y2K" problems in "net.exe", the "NET Command" that can display or adjust the current configuration of a computer's network. It can also add or cancel connections. "Net1.exe" resides in "C:\Windows\System32" like "net.exe". It has the same description and takes the same parameters. The syntax "HELP" output from either command shows "NET" in its examples. Why does Microsoft give net1.exe the same version details as net.exe? The files are different and from everything I have read net1.exe offers "enhanced" features of plain net.exe. Also way are these essential, and as frequently mentioned vulnerable. files not signed by Microsoft so we can have some confidence in their providence. I would like to have some reasonable simple and reliable means to check if what I have are valid versions and they haven't been replaced my by malware. Does Microsoft maintain a listing of all essential system file hashes (SHA256) which can be used to quickly verify validity? In this day-an-age I would expect much simple transparent security mechanism to help us ensure the security essential OS from a company such as Microsoft. So what if it might drop their profit margin by 0.00001%, that's a small price to pay compared to small business loosing 100% revenue and going bankrupt due to Ransom Ware.
