Route.exe is used to manage update and change network routing tables and if you don't know what that means don't mess with it! While not necessary it is a built in windows command so not worry about malware.
   
in my windows 10 zroute.exe was consuming nearly half of my monthly data usage (8 GB this month). I tracked it and it was in app-data file in a file named 0Route in which there were other files some I couldn't open and there was a route.exe file next to zroute.exe. I deleted all but I have no idea what it was
