The genuine wbengine.exe file is a software component of Microsoft Windows Operating System by .
The genuine "wbengine.exe" file is a Microsoft Windows Operating System component found in "C:\Windows\System32", the Block Level Backup Engine. It is the major component of Windows Backup and Restore on workstation Windows OS versions, (Vista, 7, and 10), and of Windows Server Backup. It should not be removed. Rather than backing up named files and folders, it backs up a disk volume block by block, creating a VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) file with the suffix ".vhd" that can, when needed, be loaded into a Windows virtual machine to view its contents. It needs the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to capture unchanged images of blocks while system and application programs continue using files. Backup and Restore was introduced in Vista, enhanced in Windows 7, then phased out in Windows 8 and 8.1 in favor of "File History," then brought back in Windows 10 until the Creators Update removed it again.
