What is Wdf01000?

The genuine Wdf01000.sys file is a software component of Microsoft Windows Operating System by .
The filename "Wdf01000.sys" reflects a specific major ("01") and minor ("000") version of the Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Driver Framework (KMDF) Runtime, which resides in "C:\Windows\System32\drivers". It runs continually in the background as a Windows service. There are both an "in-memory" and an "on-disk" version. Its function can be compared to that of the Common Language Runtime (CLR) for managed code in the .NET Framework. For kernel-mode drivers that are specifically written to use it, it handles Power Management, Plug and Play, and other aspects of the interface between the OS and a device so that they do not have to be written in the driver. Windows Vista included a version by default. Windows XP and later do not; the package installing a KMDF driver requires a "co-installer". If the co-installer's version is newer than the runtime's in-memory or on-disk version, an update and reboot is required.

This file prevented my Alps Thinkpad (on a Dell Latitude D630 notebook) from installing the driver (causes a "Fatal Error" during install). Renaming to wdf01000.old will resolve that issue.

deleted WF01000.sys (484kb) and saved the file. Before deleting MS update kept trying to download updates that were already installed. That fixed the problem. Apparently Windows rebuilt the file, now contains (481kb)

My wifi drivers for my asus usb wifi dongle were causing this file to spike the cpu process to 100%. If you are having trouble with audio or video skipping, download latencymon and see if something is spiking your cpu process.

Very helpful info here, as I keep getting crashes and the cursor jumps on my DELL Latitude! BlueScreenView detects it, but I can't locate it to delete it... Neither Task Manager nor Explorer...

Kernel Mode Driver Framework Runtime, system file, Microsoft Windows Operating System. Size depends of the version x86 x64 and revision. The file is always signed with MS signature. You can check the integrity of the system files from elevated Command prompt (shift + start as Administrator) with SFC /SCANNOW Command, for Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 Windows.

Dell E5550 W7 64b Enterprise with VMware Workstation 11 running a VMware (also W7 64b Enterprise). When undocking my notebook the VMware most of the times crashes and the VMware returns a blue screen with info: *** STOP: 0x0000007E *** wdf01000.sys - Address 8B0159D9 base at 8B00A000, DateStamp 51c50c11 Then after a while windows in the VMware tries to reboot, but keeps hanging in 'Starting Windows' forever. A hard reset then helps to get it running. Anyone knowing what the issue is?
  Bart v Leuken
Caused issues when using an external USB wireless network Adapter (Windows confuses wdf01000.sys with some other file that is a necessity for the network adapter) and BSODS.
  Trey
I got BSOD on this file when touching the keyboard (W10), it turned out to be Hitman pro alert, had to be removed.
  Dirkteur
After removing it (really just renamed it to *.old), my pc became stuck in a boot loop. Same goes for removing it from under the WinSxS folder. Putting it back (renaming to *.sys) took me out of the boot loop and everything was back to normal. I wish this file didn't cause so many problems, if we can't get rid of it.
  Jeff N
Keeps bsod (Blue Screen of Death) my pc and won't stop no matter how much I try to fix it
  Peter
Im no sure if its essential or not but Im sure that it is a driver causing many audio issues on my system
